KCR calls on intellectuals to raise voice against divisive forces, save social fabric

Hyderabad:In a call to intellectuals to protect the social fabric of the country, chief ministerK Chandrasekhar Raoon Monday said learned people should not keep quiet but must speak up against divisive forces trying to create

rift in society. Speaking at the concluding ceremony of India’s 75th Independence Day celebrations at LB Stadium, KCR said it was unfortunate that some people in the country were attempting to disregard the le- gacy of Mahatma Gandhi who proved to the world that powerful forces can be defeated by non-violence. Recalling the sacrifices of people who were instrumental in achieving Independence, the CM said, “Intellectuals should not keep quiet as if they are not aware of this. ” “There is a need to create awareness among the younger generation about the role of leaders such as Mahatma Gandhi as well as how the country achieved freedom,” the CM said, while pointing out how the state organised free screening of ‘Gandhi’ for school students.

The CM said the diamond jubilee celebrations in the state were a grand success with over one crore people participating in mass singing of national anthem simultaneously on August 16.

KCR, however, said it was a shame that even after 75 years of Independence, the aspirations of the poor remained unfulfilled despite the country having both natural and mineral resources.
The concluding ceremony began with the CM paying floral tributes to Mahatma Gandhi and hoisting the national flag.
Later, there were cultural programmes and noted personalities from literature, sports, culture and other fields were felicitated. Among the artistes who performed were Shankar Mahadevan, Sangita Nataka Academy chairperson Deepika Reddy and Warsi brothers.
